SAP Co-innovates with the SAP Extreme Sailing Team to Enhance the 2014 Extreme Sailing Series
SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) is continuing to enhance the Extreme Sailing Series, in the eighth year of the global circuit. As the Official Technical Partner of the Series and title sponsor of the SAP Extreme Sailing Team, SAP has continuously improved the experience for fans and pushed sailors to perform like never before. In 2014, SAP is delivering enhanced analysis tools both pre and post-race, providing sailors, media and fans with greater insight into the on-water action than previously available.
“SAP is proud to work with the Extreme Sailing Series and the SAP Extreme Sailing Team to help deliver cloud based technology solutions to improve team performance and to simplify how fans and broadcasters stay engaged in the sport from the shoreline,” said Sian Smith, Head of Marketing, Europe, Middle East & Africa at SAP. “At Act 5 in Cardiff we are pleased to demonstrate the power of the SAP Cloud solutions in this exciting venue. The UK is a strategic market for SAP and one in which we are seeing important early adoption of new technologies to fuel innovation and growth. We are committed to working closely with our partners and customers to help them simplify the way they do business with world class cloud technology solutions for the UK and the rest of the world.”
New for 2014, SAP is providing new features to deliver detailed insights into the all-important pre-start phase of races as well as post-race automated reports. The new analysis options feature key start line parameters including: length, angle to wind, favored side and advantage, all in real-time. The live leaderboard also displays statistics such as countdown to the start of the race, distance to start line, position where the line has been crossed and start tack.
The post-race automated reports use analytics solutions such as SAP BusinessObjects Explorer software and SAP Crystal Reports offerings as well as the SAP HANA platform to handle the increasing amount of data gathered from sensors on the boats and across the race course. These reports can be tailored to individual requirements, with the ability to break the data down to supply, for instance, an overview of a year, a specific team, an Act, a day or even a certain race. This is an important development for teams and media in particular as it is enabling them to review and compare specific moments in the Series in an easily consumable format.
“As a team we are committed to continuously improving our performance,” commented Jes Gram-Hansen, co-skipper, SAP Extreme Sailing Team. “Like SAP, we also strive to improve the sport for all involved and have collaborated closely with SAP to develop enhanced performance analysis features for this year’s Extreme Sailing Series. This is an important development as the sailors continue to push the boundaries of performance and optimize their pre-race strategies and get an edge over their competitors.”
After a tentative start to the 2014 season, the SAP Extreme Sailing Team put themselves back in contention with a strong fourth place at Act 2 in Muscat, Oman and a solid performance at Act 4 in St Petersburg to finish sixth. In 2013 the team also put in a spectacular performance in Cardiff to claim third place so they will be looking to replicate this success and push for a podium place once again.
The 2014 Extreme Sailing Series features eleven international teams. This year’s series has seen Emirates Team New Zealand join the fleet, as well as the J.P. Morgan BAR team, skippered by 2013 America’s Cup winner, Sir Ben Ainslie. Act 5 of the 2014 Extreme Sailing Series kicks off at Cardiff Bay on August 22nd.
