SAP Customers Recognised for Quality Excellence
FELTHAM, United Kingdom - SAP (NYSE: SAP) UK and Ireland is pleased to announce the winners of its annual Quality Awards for their successful implementations of SAP systems. Each year, SAP presents awards to recognise customers who have achieved excellence in planning and executing their SAP projects, delivering significant benefits to their organisations.
SAP announced nine winners, who were awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze accolades. The winners will be presented with their awards at the SAP Quality Awards 2012 Dinner, held tonight, Wednesday 7th November.
Each winner showcased the quality processes they put in place during planning and implementation phases, clearly demonstrating how fundamental they had been to the overall success of the project, resulting in significant benefits to their businesses. The judging panel was made up of representatives from SAP and external experts who judged against strict criteria including adherence to SAP’s Ten Quality Principles, demonstration of time-to-value and a focus of how quality excellence was achieved through the entire implementation cycle.
There were three categories and winners for the Gold Award:
- Small Implementation: Barclays Bank PLC
- Medium Implementation: JD Wetherspoon plc
- Large Implementation: National Grid plc
The Gold Award winners are now eligible to take part in the SAP EMEA Quality Awards, the winners of which will be announced at SAPPHIRE NOW 2012 in Madrid on Wednesday 14th November.
The Silver Award winners were SThree PLC (with partner Bluefin Solutions.) for Small Implementation, Hillarys Blinds Ltd. (with partner AgilityWorks Ltd.) for Medium Implementation and BG Group PLC (with SAP consulting services) for Large Implementation.
The Bronze Award winners were BAE Systems PLC Global Combat Systems (with partner CompriseIT) for Small Implementation, Bauer Consumer Media Ltd. & H Bauer Publishing (with partner HCL AXON) for Medium Implementation and Electrocomponents PLC (with SAP consulting services) for Large Implementation.

Small Implementation, Gold Award: Barclays Bank PLC
Operating in 50 countries worldwide, Barclays believes that the rapid development of mobile apps that make life easier for our customers and colleagues is essential for long term success.
Barclays embarked on its journey with SAP in March 2012, with implementation partner Bluefin Solutions. Rolling out a mobile expenses application on SAP Sybase Unwired Platform, Barclays Bank PLC opted for a Rapid Development Approach with a number of releases, ensuring close integration with the existing back end SAP HR travel and expenses system. The business needed a secure, efficient method for employees to file and manage travel expense claims from their mobile devices anywhere, at any time. The implementation was closely managed at each critical deployment juncture, involving key areas of the business as and when appropriate.
The completed project fully supports its initial objectives; delivering 30% time saving whilst enabling administrative activities during previous unproductive time and the overall improvement of compliance, resulting in fewer lost receipts and more regular submissions.
Medium Implementation, Gold Award: JD Wetherspoon plc
JD Wetherspoon embarked on its ‘Affinity’ project using SAP software including the Retail solution, SRM, BPC, Data Services and Inventory Management, implemented through the partner Keytree Ltd. The project was implemented at JD Wetherspoon’s head office over a 12 month implementation period, with the objective to improve its inventory, procure to pay, record to report (including budgets and forecasts) and analysis.
The company used a risk management approach which focused on effective communication and education throughout the process. As a result, JD Wetherspoon ensured readiness for go-live by identifying, recruiting and training an efficient support and master data team as well as adopting relevant support from a third party partner.
The business successfully implemented ‘Affinity’ and by using SAP software, JD Wetherspoon has achieved financial control with regards to purchase orders and invoices across the business and three-way invoice matching for all goods. The success of the project is enabling the decommissioning of 12 systems.
Large Implementation, Gold Award: National Grid plc
National Grid embarked on a project with SAP to implement software through partnership with Ernst & Young LLP, Wipro Ltd., Syclo International Ltd., ClickSoftware Ltd., Esri Holdings Limited and CSC LP.
The objectives of the project were to improve efficiencies of allocating and delivering work to the field workforce, common end-to-end processes, replacing 40 legacy systems with four core strategic applications, single master data repositories, implementation of a single integrated call-handling system, creation of robust data and process controls as well as improving overall workforce efficiencies.
The implementation strategy ensured the delivery of key benefits whilst minimising risk by being managed very closely in order to drive delivery to schedule. Initial examples of business benefits National Grid has achieved since implementation are a 20% increase in maintenance productivity, a 5% increase in customer satisfaction and a £400k reduction in fuel costs. Critically the implementation was completed whilst achieving essential emergency response standards of service across all four of National Grid’s regional networks.
