    • Being that we're a pharmaceutical company, there's tons of systems, there's tons of data, and it affects all lines of businesses. So SAP really was the promise of the day, and I think it's since been fulfilled for us, to really enterprise-enable our business at Wyeth. So, over the last nine to 10 years, we've been pretty successful in doing that with SAP. We've been working a lot with a lot of the different lines of businesses in the procurement, sales and marketing, to name a few, human resources, to be able to take their business requirements and we really ask ourselves the question, Why not SAP? So, I think there's a lot of folks out there who say, Well, why SAP? Or how can we go in one direction or another? We really took the approach to say, Why not SAP? Why couldn't we do this all on this platform? And I think it's been a real turning point for us, because we've really been able to leverage a tremendous amount of value out of the investment that's been made in SAP simply by asking ourselves that question, Why not SAP? What we've focused on, even with a cost perspective in mind, is that I think you see the ROI multiply as you start to utilize your back-end systems. And you hear all these different business requirements that come in from sales and marketing, from procurement, from human resources, from supply chain, being able to build applications and solutions that sit on top of SAP, giving them a visually appealing interface to go and do their job, personalized, role-specific. It's really actually helped to mitigate the cost. One of my mottos has been, "Keep things simple," so that as end users go and use a system that's accessing SAP, they're doing it in a simple fashion. They're dealing with a visually compelling interface. And that really has, I think, increased adoption of SAP across the company. By someone going in and interacting with an application that looks and feels exactly like they want it to look at feel, has really increased that adoption in SAP. And it's kind of even at Wyeth taken the old axiom that SAP's an ERP, back-end, rigid system to, Wow, this is what SAP really looks like? How can we do more of that? This whole concept of a process-based portal and everybody has this buzzword of service-oriented architecture. And a lot of times it's treated separately in separate topics. But quite frankly, in my world, in the world of today where you have social computing, you have Web 2.0, you have all these types of rich Internet applications out there that people are used to working with, you have to figure out, where does SOA come into play? Whatever your process is from a business perspective, you want to try to closely model your applications against what your business process is, because how it works for your company might be different from how that process is done in another company. And if you collect all those different services from all these different back ends, and you start building applications on top and then building them very rapidly and reusing existing assets, you don't change around the UI a lot. People are used to using what they're already used to using. But if something changes, you can swap it out with relatively little pain. So, we've been able to do that using a process-based portal approach, sitting on top of a service-driven-enabled approach, on top of our back-end ERP systems, namely SAP.
